Country News: “Mr. Country-Gospel” Bob Willis Dies At 75
Bob Willis, the preacher and musician known as “Mr. Country-Gospel”, died Friday, July 10, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville. He was 75 and had battled heart issues for many years.
Mr. Willis wrote numerous songs recorded by the late country star Jimmie Davis, and his “Guilty of Love (In The First Degree)” was a gospel hit in 1970. His songs were recorded by The Florida Boys, The Happy Goodman Family, Carl and Pearl Butler, Jody Miller and others.
Though he never lived in Nashville, Mr. Willis’ songs were often heard here. He was made an Honorary Citizen of Tennessee in 1984 by Gov. Lamar Alexander. His son, Bob Willis, Jr., lives in Nashville and works to spread the word about his songs.
“He told me, ‘One day the world will hear these, but chances are I’ll be gone,’” said Willis Jr. “He said, ‘That’s just the way it is.’”
Mr. Willis preached in Folsomville, Ind. For 45 years. His memorial services took place on Monday in Folsomville.
